Why Women Underprice — and What It Actually Costs

Women underprice services so consistently that I can almost predict it before a new client opens her mouth. She’ll describe what she does. I’ll hear the scope. Then she’ll name the number, and it won’t match.

Not by a little. By a lot.

A member in our community recently walked me through a client project that took her three full weeks. Custom strategy. Multiple deliverables. Follow-up support. She charged $800. When I asked her what she’d charge a friend, she laughed and said probably the same. When I asked what a man with her experience would charge, she went quiet.

That’s the gap. And it’s not about confidence.

Where Women Underprice Services — and Why

The underpricing isn’t random. It follows a pattern. It shows up most when the work is hard to quantify — consulting, strategy, creative, coaching. Anything where the deliverable is transformation instead of a tangible thing.

What’s underneath it is almost always relational. She doesn’t want to make the client uncomfortable. She wants to be accessible. She’s afraid the client will say no and she’ll take it personally. So she preemptively discounts — not on paper, but in her head — before the number ever leaves her mouth.

I did this for years in my own business. Ran a soft ice cream stand from age twelve to twenty, funded two college educations with the profits, and still caught myself apologizing for my pricing when I started coaching. Fifty years of operating and I still had to unlearn the instinct to make the number comfortable for the other person.

What Underpricing Actually Costs You

It’s not just the revenue. Underpricing costs you the clients you actually want.

Premium clients read pricing as a signal. When your rate is too low, it doesn’t say affordable — it says uncertain. The client who would have been your best fit goes somewhere else, not because they found someone better, but because your price told them you weren’t sure you belonged at that table.

Meanwhile, the client who takes the low rate often requires the most hand-holding, scope-creeps the hardest, and pays the slowest. You built a business model that selects for the wrong people.

The Fix Isn’t a Formula

You don’t fix underpricing with a pricing calculator. You fix it by looking at what you’re actually selling and deciding to believe it’s worth what you know it’s worth.

Start here: name your current rate. Then name what you’d charge if you weren’t worried about the reaction. Write both numbers down. The distance between them is the cost of your discomfort.

Then pick one client — the next one — and quote the real number. Not the comfortable one. The real one. See what happens.

What usually happens is nothing dramatic. She says yes. Or she asks a question you can answer. The catastrophe you rehearsed doesn’t arrive.

That’s where the shift begins. Not in a workshop. In the next conversation you have the nerve to price honestly.
